The phono stage can easily make or break a vinyl based system.
The stage of phono pre-amplification is absolutely crucial - more
so than the pre-amp or amplifier stage - if you have any doubts
about this we urge you to get a domonstration of something like
the gsp audio phono stages. The reason for this importance is that
the phono stage carries out up to a massive 95% of your total signal
amplification from cartridge to speakers. This is too much to entrust
to a feeble £1 chip used in many integrated and pre-amps.
For more information on this please see our page on "why
phono stages are so important".
The phono stage is the amplification required to step up the very
low output levels produced by mm or mc cartridges to line level
voltages (i.e. the 1 volt output levels of CD players, DVD players,
tape decks etc.). This stage is often severely underestimated in
the contribution it makes to producing a good sound. The way in
which your amplifier handles the extremely low signal levels (thousandths
of a Volt) from the cartridge is critical - information is more
easily lost or distorted at this stage than later on in the signal
path. Information lost can never be regained and any distortions
and colorations are amplified thousands of times. It is not difficult
to appreciate why this area has so much potential for improvement
and is often the weakest link in a system.
There are theoretical advantages for a separate phono stage
The power supply can be separate
If the supply is seperate then the sensitive circuitry is not
susceptible to stray fields from the large transformer inside
most amplifiers
Recommended phono stages are as follows
Phono stages under £90 are an nexpensive solution for an
amplifier with no phono stage input - although this is a get by
solution it is not worth seriously compromising in the phono stage
as it is the most critical area of amplification for a vinyl based
system and makes a huge difference. If you can possibly afford
it you should at least go for a Graham Slee Phono stage as they
are considerably better than the stages you will find in most
integrated amplifiers..
At £80 There is simply nothing that comes even close to
the Graham Slee products "Gram 1 " moving magnet phono
stage.
At £80 - £150 The Gram 2 mm phono stage is a brilliant
upgrade for almost all amplifier phono stages.
For moving coil at this price we can recommend the Creek phono
stages.
At £150 - £300 The Gram 2 Special Edition mm phono
stage is superb value for money.
For moving coil at this price we can recommend the Creek phono
stages.
At £300 - £500 It gets more tricky and the competition
is strong in this area of the market - there are a number of alternatives
- especially if you have a moving coil cartridge.
You can either add the GSP Elevator head amp to the Gram 2 SE
or you can go for the Trichord range - The Dino for example is
excellent..
£500 - £800 The diablo phono stage has been very
well received and again the GSP audio stages are excellent.
